With an emphasis on joyful engagement in life, the Nyingma Institute in Berkeley, California has been bringing the riches of the Tibetan tradition to the Western world since 1972. We offer training in meditation, Buddhist studies, and Tibetan language in ways that blend cognitive and experiential learning. Tibetan Yoga; Nyingma Psychology; and the Time, Space, and Knowledge vision were all developed here by our founder Tarthang Tulku. These unique fields of study provide effective ways to counteract tension, clear the mind, and open body and mind to new dimensions of feeling.

The public is invited
to visit the Nyingma Institute and enjoy its serene atmosphere. We are open from 9am - 8pm, Monday through Friday,
9am - 5pm Saturdays, and 9am - 7pm Sundays.

Instruction is offered in three formats: weekly 90-minute classes, Saturday and weekend workshops, and week-long retreats. In addition to scheduled programs, private retreats are offered year around – allowing you to go on retreat on your own schedule .

In the bay area for over forty years, the Nyingma Institute offers a gentle path of self-knowledge and altruistic service based upon the Buddha’s teachings. We continue to deepen this tradition by offering retreats for a range of interests and ages. On the schedule are Buddhist retreats, meditation retreats, Tibetan Yoga retreats, Buddhist Psychology retreats and more.

Viewing freedom as intrinsic to our being, we discover that our lives are what we make them. All doors are open, our choices are unlimited. Tarthang Tulku, writing in Knowledge of Freedom.
